(Worthy News) – In a majority vote Monday, the UN Security Council rejected a Russian-led resolution that called for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war but which did not specifically condemn the Hamas terror group for its brutal October 7 surprise attack on Israeli civilians, the Times of Israel (TOI) reports. The attack, which triggered the current war, left 1,300 Israeli civilian men, women, and children dead and around 200 kidnapped and taken to Gaza.

The resolution received five votes in favor (China, Gabon, Mozambique, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates) and four against (France, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States), with six abstentions (Albania, Brazil, Ecuador, Ghana, Malta, and Switzerland), the UN said in a statement.

Representing the United Kingdom in rejecting the Russian proposal, Barbara Woodward told the UNSC: “We cannot support a resolution which fails to condemn Hamas’ terror attacks,” TOI reports.

In a separate address to the Council, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield had harsh criticism for Russia, saying: “By failing to condemn Hamas, Russia is giving cover to a terrorist group that brutalizes innocent civilians. It is outrageous, it is hypocritical, and it is indefensible.”

“We agree that this council should take action, but we have to get it right. And we’ll work intensively with all members on the council to do so,” the US ambassador continued. “Hamas set the humanitarian crisis in Gaza in motion, and we cannot allow this council to unfairly shift the blame to Israel and excuse Hamas for its decades of cruelty. Period.”
