US and NATO To Suspend Cold War Arms Treaty

nato logo worthy ministries(Worthy News) – The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) criticized Russia’s withdrawal from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe and reciprocated by indicating their intention to suspend the treaty as well.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) decision comes in the wake of Russia’s recent withdrawal from the agreement on Tuesday and longstanding Western concerns about Moscow’s non-compliance with the treaty’s terms.

NATO condemned Russia’s exit from the treaty and emphasized that it is part of a systematic series of actions eroding Euro-Atlantic security. Officials said the suspension of the treaty is scheduled to take place on Dec. 7.

When it was established, the Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE) treaty was regarded as a pivotal element of European security. Its primary objective was to prevent either side from amassing forces for a sudden attack in the heart of Europe, effectively neutralizing the Soviet bloc’s significant numerical advantage in conventional forces.

The suspension of the CFE marks the abandonment of yet another historic agreement that played a pivotal role in ending the Cold War.
