(Worthy News) – On Monday, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer, challenging his second-degree murder conviction in the death of George Floyd.

The justices, without offering any comments, upheld the state court decisions that affirmed Chauvin’s conviction and 22 1/2-year sentence. Chauvin’s legal team contended that their client was deprived of a fair trial in 2021 due to pretrial publicity and apprehensions about potential violence if he were acquitted.

George Floyd, an African American, died on May 25, 2020. His death triggered widespread global protests demanding justice for those responsible and advocating for an end to police brutality and racism on an international scale.

A white officer, Chauvin, knelt on Floyd’s neck for nine and a half minutes outside a convenience store where Floyd was suspected of attempting to use a counterfeit $20 bill.

A bystander’s video documented Floyd’s last moments, capturing him pleading for his mother and uttering the words, “I can’t breathe,” which subsequently became a rallying cry for the Black Lives Matter movement.

The passing of Floyd sparked global protests, with many escalating into violence.
