(Worthy News) – At the behest of Republicans alarmed at the record numbers of migrants arriving at the US southern border, a bipartisan core group of senators is now considering a deal that would only allow the Biden administration’s $106 billion year-end request for Ukraine, Israel, and national security needs in exchange for substantial changes for the asylum process, the Associated Press reports.

On Wednesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson privately told Republican Senators that he needs substantial border security changes as part of the Biden administration’s overseas war funding package, AP reports.

Threatened with impeachment at the hands of Republicans who blame him for what they see as failed border policies, Democratic Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas recently told Congress that the US immigration system is “broken” and needs to be reformed from top to bottom, AP reports.

The bipartisan group of Senators is discussing proposals that would make it more challenging for migrants to pass initial screening criteria used by immigration officials in deciding whether to allow someone to stay in the US and pursue an asylum case, AP said.

“We’re not going to try to secure other countries and not secure ours,” Republican Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma stated earlier this month.

Although the Senators are considering a shorter-term fix rather than a full-scale overhaul of the immigration system at this time, the Biden administration is considering their proposals as the price to be paid for supporting Ukraine and Israel in their respective wars against Russia and Hamas and for national security needs, AP reports.
