(Worthy News) – Congress is taking steps to prevent a partial government shutdown by proposing a two-step stopgap funding bill this week, just ahead of the impending Friday deadline for government funding.

On Sunday night, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) agreed on the text of a continuing resolution to maintain current government funding levels and extend the government shutdown deadlines until the first week of March.

“The bipartisan topline funding agreement reached ensures that America will be able to address many of the major challenges our country faces at home and abroad,” Mr. Schumer said in a statement on Sunday evening.

Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized that the Continuing Resolution (CR) is essential to achieve the goals House Republicans are diligently pursuing: putting an end to omnibus governance, securing significant policy victories, and ensuring responsible management of American taxpayer dollars.

The legislation aims to prevent a partial government shutdown, originally scheduled for January 19, and another one on February 2, which was anticipated due to the staggered nature of the prior stopgap funding bill.

Nevertheless, a significant number of Republicans expressed their discontent on social media platform X. The House Freedom Caucus, in particular, wasted no time in rejecting the proposal, conveying their message with a post on X that read, “This is what surrender looks like.”

If Speaker Johnson were to introduce Senator Schumer’s Continuing Resolution (CR) on the House floor, it would undoubtedly require Democratic backing to secure passage in the lower chamber, given the expected Republican opposition to the bill.
