(Worthy News) – Hackers supported by China have accessed key U.S. critical infrastructure for at least five years, according to a U.S. Intelligence Advisory seen by Worthy News on Wednesday.

The advisory issued by the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the National Security Agency (NSA), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) explains that hackers supported by China achieved and maintained access to U.S. critical infrastructure to “pre-position themselves on IT networks for disruptive or destructive cyberattacks against U.S. critical infrastructure in the event of a major crisis or conflict with the United States.”

The advisory states that the China-supported hacking collective Volt Typhoon leveraged weaknesses in routers, firewalls, and VPNs to infiltrate water, transportation, energy, and communication networks throughout the United States.

The advisory explained how the hacking group extensively used pilfered administrator credentials to keep their access to the systems, managing, in some instances, to maintain this access for a minimum of five years to position itself to be disruptive during “potential geopolitical tensions and/or military conflicts.”

U.S. authorities are growing increasingly concerned that China might initiate damaging cyberattacks in the period leading up to or during a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
