(Worthy News) – Israel on Monday deployed for the first time the “C-Dome” ship-mounted defense system to shoot down a “hostile aircraft” over the Red Sea port city of Eilat, Time reports. No injuries or damage were caused in the incident.

In a statement posted on Telegram Tuesday, the Israel Defense Forces said: “Following the sirens that sounded in the area of Eilat regarding the infiltration of a hostile aircraft, IDF Naval forces identified a suspicious aerial target crossing into Israeli territory. The target was successfully intercepted by the ‘C-Dome’ naval defense system.”

Developed by Rafael Advanced Defence Systems, a state-owned defense technology company, the C-Dome has been operational since 2022, Time reports. C-Dome is the naval equivalent of the Iron Dome rocket defense which has been instrumental in defending Israeli civilians thousands of rockets fired indiscriminately by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

C-Dome has similar technology to the Iron Dome but is mounted on a ship. However, unlike the Iron Dome which has its own radar, the C-Dome’s radar is integrated into the ship’s radar. This, Rafael has said, ensures: “full-circular vessel protection and high kill probability against a full spectrum of modern threats—maritime and coastal.”

Monday’s suspicious aircraft may have been launched by the Iran-backed Houthi jihadist group in Yemen which, having declared it is joining the war against Israel launched by Hamas on Oct. 7, has fired missiles toward southern Israel.
