(Worthy News) – A new study by researchers at the US-based Mayo Clinic shows that trans-identifying boys who are prescribed puberty blockers may suffer long-term infertility and atrophied testicles, the Christian Post reports.

Titled “Puberty Blocker and Aging Impact on Testicular Cell States and Function,” the study was published in March. The study’s findings have not yet been peer reviewed.
The study analyzed testicular tissue samples from 87 boys under the age of 18, the Christian Post reports.

Nine of the patients identified as girls and had been prescribed puberty blockers. Two of the nine boys were found to have “abnormalities” in their testicles. According to the researchers, these abnormalities represent “unprecedented histological evidence revealing detrimental pediatric testicular sex gland responses to [puberty blockers].”

“At the tissue level, we report mild-to-severe sex gland atrophy in [puberty blocker] treated children,” the researchers wrote. The abnormalities raised “a potential concern regarding the complete ‘reversibility’ and reproductive fitness of [spermatogonial stem cells],” the researchers noted.

The researchers emphasized that the currently available clinical data worldwide is insufficient to provide a clear understanding of the risks of prescribing puberty blockers to children, the Christian Post said. The study authors assessed their research is “significant” in light of the recent and ongoing spike in transgender treatments “despite limited data on the long-term consequences of [puberty blocker] exposure on testicular reproductive health.”
