(Worthy News) — The United States, Japan, and South Korea have agreed to hold a trilateral joint exercise named Freedom Edge this summer. Following a meeting of the defense ministers from the three allied nations, these exercises will span multiple domains, including land, sea, air, cyber, and space.

The agreement was reached on Sunday during talks between U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Japan’s Defense Minister Minoru Kihara,  and South Korea’s National Defense Minister Shin Won-sik. These discussions took place on the sidelines of the Asia Security Summit, known as the Shangri-La Dialogue, in Singapore. This marked the first in-person meeting of the three nations’ defense ministers since June 2023.

In a joint statement released after the meeting, the ministers pledged “to develop a trilateral security cooperation framework within the year to institutionalize trilateral security cooperation, including senior-level policy consultations, information sharing, trilateral exercises, and defense exchange cooperation.” This effort aims to ensure peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, in the Indo-Pacific region, and beyond.

They also criticized China’s aggressive maritime expansion in the South China Sea as “dangerous behavior supporting unlawful claims.”

The three defense chiefs condemned North Korea’s recent ballistic missile tests and the launches of what Pyongyang claims to be a military spy satellite, according to the statement. They also agreed to optimize the real-time information-sharing system on North Korean missile launches by the end of this year.
