Kansas Sues Pfizer for Alleged Misleading Statements About Risks, Effectiveness of COVID-19 Vaccine

(Worthy News) – The US state of Kansas has launched a legal case against the New York-based Pfizer pharmaceutical giant alleging the company violated the Kansas Consumer Protection Act by misleading the public about the risks and effectiveness of its COVID-19 vaccine, Reuters reports.

Filed in the District Court of Thomas County on Monday, the suit seeks financial damages in an unspecified amount, Reuters said. The lawsuit claims that soon after Pfizer first rolled out its COVID-19 vaccine in early 2021, it hid evidence that the shot was linked to pregnancy complications, including miscarriage.

The suit also alleges that Pfizer falsely claimed its vaccine would be highly effective against mutated COVID-19 variants, and that it would prevent transmission as well as sickness, Reuters reports.

“Pfizer made multiple misleading statements to deceive the public about its vaccine at a time when Americans needed the truth,” Republican Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach said in a statement.
Pfizer denies the allegations. “The representations made by Pfizer about its COVID-19 vaccine have been accurate and science-based,” the company said in a statement.

A 2023 review of 21 studies by the US National Institutes of Health found that COVID vaccines were not linked to miscarriage, Reuters noted. In June 2021, the US Food and Drug Administration added a warning to Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine label about the risk of myocarditis and pericarditis, conditions involving inflammation of the heart.
