(Worthy News) – Archaeologists excavating an ancient fort in northern Egypt have uncovered a bronze sword inscribed with the name Pharaoh Ramses II, the pharaoh believed to have opposed Moses according to the Biblical record in the Book of Exodus, the Washington Times reports. A limestone block bearing hieroglyphics about the rule of Ramses II was also found at the fort site.

Egypt Today reports that archaeologist Ahmed Said El-Kharadly from the Supreme Council of Antiquities led the excavation at the Tel Al-Abqain archaeological site in Egypt’s Beheira governorate.

While the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has not specified the age of the fort or the sword, Egyptologists generally agree that Rameses likely ascended to the throne in 1279 BC, over 3,200 years ago, and ruled for 66 years.

Concerning the fort, Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities Secretary-General Mohamed Ismail Khaled told Egyptian newspaper Ahram Online: “It is an important discovery highlighting the strategic role of Tell Al-Abqain area as a crucial military outpost on the Western military road, protecting Egypt’s northwestern borders from potential invasions by Libyan tribes and Sea Peoples.”

Other artifacts were discovered at the fort, including weapons, hunting tools, personal adornments, religious items, Ivory kohl applicators, carnelian and faience beads, and protective amulets, Egypt Today said.
