Nicaragua’s Prisons a Horror for Christian Political Prisoners Amid Widespread Crackdown on Churches

(Worthy News) – Nicaragua’s prison system has become a living nightmare for Christian political prisoners and anyone who dares speak out against the Sandinista National Liberation Front (SNLF) and the Nicaraguan government.
Human rights groups and former detainees describe horrific abuses within infamous detention centers such as Direccion de Auxilio Judicial (DAJ), known as El Chipote; el Sistema Penitenciario Nacional Jorge Navarro, known as La Modelo; and Sistema Penitenciario de Mujeres, known as La Esperanza.
Former prisoners report enduring repeated beatings, rape, asphyxiation, threats, humiliation, and other violent acts by police officers during interrogations. These abuses have left many with deep psychological scars, including paranoia, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
To cover up evidence of torture and mistreatment, prison authorities routinely block lawyers and family members from visiting inmates. The extent of these abuses is further underscored by at least 14 cases of forced disappearances involving political prisoners. Inmates often suffer from untreated medical conditions such as gastritis, skin infections, muscle pain, and stomach ailments as a result of neglect.
Upon release, many victims face further hardship. Former prisoners often struggle to obtain medical care for injuries sustained under torture.
Inside the prisons, authorities frequently isolate political detainees, restrict their access to exercise yards, and forcibly group them into political communities as a form of control and further punishment. These acts violate basic human rights, and no accountability has followed as authorities refuse to acknowledge the abuses.
The brutal treatment of political prisoners coincides with an ongoing crackdown on Christian pastors, churches, and ministries over the past two years. The government of President Daniel Ortega has intensified efforts to silence religious leaders, shutter independent ministries, seize church properties, and expel foreign missionaries. Many pastors have been arrested, threatened, or forced into exile as part of the regime’s campaign to control religious expression and suppress voices seen as critical of the government.
Yet, despite this climate of oppression, there are signs of spiritual revival.
As reported by Worthy News on November 12, 2023, tens of thousands of Nicaraguans have “accepted Jesus Christ” as their Lord and Savior, and thousands have been miraculously healed, according to two U.S.-based mission groups active in the country.
While the government tightens its grip on the nation’s faithful, many Nicaraguans continue to seek hope and healing through the message of the Gospel.
