(Worthy News) – After nearly three weeks of intensive U.S.- and Qatari-mediated negotiations with Hamas in Doha, both Israel and the United States have recalled their negotiating teams, citing a lack of genuine progress and deep-rooted ideological obstacles from the terror group that continue to stall a potential deal.

The negotiations aimed at securing a 60-day ceasefire and the release of hostages from Gaza have once again reached an impasse. The proposed framework envisioned the release of 10 living Israeli hostages and the remains of 18 others in exchange for an unspecified—but heavily contested—number of Palestinian prisoners. Hamas’s latest response was met with frustration by all parties involved.

U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff bluntly criticized Hamas, saying its response was “selfish” and that the group “does not appear to be coordinated or acting in good faith.” Witkoff confirmed the U.S. delegation’s return home to consider “alternative options to bring the hostages home and try to create a more stable environment for the people of Gaza.”

Israel, meanwhile, took a more diplomatic tone, with senior officials emphasizing that the recall of its negotiators did not signal a total collapse. “There was no explosion, no collapse,” one Israeli official told reporters. “Progress has been made,” the official added, but warned that major differences remain on demilitarization, prisoner swaps, and Hamas’s absolute refusal to discuss an end to the war.

At the heart of the stalled negotiations lies not just strategic disagreement but a deep ideological resistance rooted in Hamas’s jihadist worldview. In this framework, Jews are not merely political opponents but theological enemies—often dehumanized as descendants of apes and pigs, corrupters of faith, and illegitimate occupiers of Islamic land. Such rhetoric, drawn from extremist interpretations of Islamic texts, frames the conflict as a divine mandate rather than a political dispute. For Hamas, conceding to Israel or accepting a ceasefire would not only signal defeat but constitute a theological humiliation—an affront to the greatness of Allah and a betrayal of their cause. Any compromise risks undermining their justification for jihad and shattering the spiritual foundation of their movement, making meaningful negotiations exceedingly difficult.

These ideological convictions manifest in concrete demands. Hamas has insisted that Israel release 200 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences and 2,000 additional detainees arrested since the October 7, 2023, attacks—many of whom remain uncharged. Israel, in turn, views such a proposal as excessive, though sources indicate it may be a starting bid rather than a final demand.

Disputes over security arrangements have also bogged down the negotiations. Israel initially demanded a two-kilometer buffer zone inside Gaza, later reduced to 1.2 kilometers. Hamas has remained fixed at a one-kilometer limit, refusing to budge further.

Despite these divisions, both Qatari and Egyptian mediators have continued pushing for progress. Israeli negotiators praised their efforts as “proactive and significant.” Brig. Gen. (Res.) Gal Hirsch, Israel’s Coordinator for Hostages and Missing Persons, reiterated that the return to Israel was for consultations, not abandonment of the talks. “We continue to act… in order to return all of our kidnapped people home, both the living and the dead,” he said.

Families of the hostages, however, expressed deep concern. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum issued a sharp statement: “The negotiations have dragged on for far too long. Each day that passes endangers the hostages’ chances of recovery.” They called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump to urgently re-engage.

“You’ve already brought 39 hostages home,” the families pleaded in a video message. “Your leadership can make the difference. Please don’t let the window close.”

Netanyahu, speaking at a state ceremony commemorating Zionist leader Ze’ev Jabotinsky, doubled down on Israel’s war aims. “If Hamas understands our readiness to reach a deal as weakness… it is greatly mistaken,” he declared. “We are determined to achieve all the aims of the war. We are determined to bring everyone back.”

Hamas is believed to be holding 50 hostages, including at least 20 believed to be alive, and the remains of 28 others. Among them is an IDF soldier abducted in 2014.

While negotiations appear stalled, sources close to the mediation efforts believe the gaps can still be bridged—if Hamas is willing to confront the spiritual and ideological price of compromise. Until then, the fate of the hostages and the path to a lasting ceasefire remain uncertain.

While the mainstream press and secular analysts often overlook the spiritual dimension of this conflict, the reality is far deeper than political posturing or territorial control. For Hamas, being forced out of Gaza would not merely be a strategic loss—it would represent a spiritual defeat, a public concession to the very nation they demonize as illegitimate. Yet prophetically, Psalm 83 speaks of a conspiracy among nations to wipe out Israel, only for God to turn their shame into an opportunity for repentance: “That they may seek Your name, O LORD.” Could this be such a moment for Gaza? As the weight of war, loss, and failed ideology presses in, perhaps even amidst the rubble, hearts may begin to turn—not toward more hatred—but toward the God of Israel, whose justice humbles enemies and whose mercy invites all to seek His name.
