U.S. to Establish Military Presence Near Damascus Ahead of Israel-Syria Pact

(Worthy News) – The United States is preparing to station troops at an airbase near Damascus to support a U.S.-brokered security pact between Syria and Israel, Reuters reported, citing multiple sources familiar with the plan.

If implemented, it would mark the first American military presence in the Syrian capital, signaling a major realignment in the Middle East after the fall of longtime leader Bashar al-Assad, a former ally of Iran.

The Damascus airbase–strategically located near southern Syria–is expected to serve as a hub for logistics, surveillance, and humanitarian operations tied to a proposed non-aggression agreement between Israel and Syria. The deal, still under negotiation, would establish a demilitarized zone along the border and could become the most significant regional accord since Israel’s peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan.

U.S. and Syrian officials say the initiative reflects President Ahmad al-Sharaa’s shift away from Tehran and his efforts to rebuild ties with the West. “For the first time in decades, Syria is working with the United States on a framework that includes Israel,” a Western diplomat told Reuters.

Trump to Host Syrian President at White House

President Donald Trump will meet al-Sharaa at the White House on Monday — the first visit by a Syrian head of state to Washington. The meeting is expected to finalize details of the agreement and define the U.S. role in its enforcement.

American reconnaissance teams have reportedly confirmed the Damascus runway is operational, and U.S. C-130 aircraft have already landed for testing. Talks between U.S. and Syrian defense officials have centered on coordination and logistical support, while Syria would retain full sovereignty over the base.

The Pentagon declined to comment on the deployment, citing operational security, but said Washington “constantly evaluates our posture in Syria to effectively combat ISIS.”

Part of Broader U.S. Strategy

Analysts note the move mirrors U.S. monitoring operations in Lebanon and Israel that oversee ceasefire arrangements involving Hezbollah and Hamas. The U.S. already maintains about 1,000 troops in northeastern Syria assisting Kurdish-led forces against ISIS, but the Damascus mission would focus on postwar stabilization and normalization.

Sources said U.S. Central Command chief Admiral Brad Cooper and envoy Thomas Barrack visited Damascus in September, thanking al-Sharaa for counterterrorism cooperation and emphasizing Trump’s vision of “a prosperous Middle East and a stable Syria at peace with its neighbors.”

Washington has pressed Damascus to finalize the Israel-Syria pact before the end of the year, possibly before al-Sharaa’s upcoming visit.

Prophetic Significance?

Prophecy teachers are closely observing the rising tensions and military buildup surrounding Damascus, reflecting on whether these developments could tie into the ancient prophecy of Isaiah 17:1 — “Behold, Damascus will cease from being a city, and it will be a ruinous heap.” For millennia, Damascus has stood as one of the oldest continually inhabited cities on earth, yet Scripture warns of a day when it will be left desolate. Some interpret today’s movements — from shifting alliances between Israel, Syria, and Western powers to the increasing military presence near the capital — as potential precursors to that prophetic outcome. Others caution that while the situation may foreshadow future fulfillment, it could also represent yet another cycle of regional conflict leading up to the appointed time. Either way, prophecy watchers agree: these events remind believers that God’s Word remains true, and that history continues to move toward the moment when His plans for the nations are fully revealed.
