U.S. Imposes New Sanctions on Hezbollah-Linked Network Accused of Blocking Lebanon Peace Efforts

(Worthy News) – The United States imposed new sanctions Thursday on individuals and entities linked to Hezbollah, accusing them of using political and financial influence to obstruct Lebanon’s peace process and delay the Iran-backed group’s disarmament.
The Treasury Department said the sanctions build on earlier measures announced in March 2026, which targeted networks operating in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Oman that allegedly helped raise money, manage contracts, and run front companies for Hezbollah. The latest action is aimed at choking off the group’s financial lifelines while increasing pressure on those who help preserve its power inside Lebanon’s political and security institutions.
“Hezbollah must disarm for Lebanon to achieve a secure and prosperous future,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement. “Treasury will continue to target Hezbollah’s financial networks and hold accountable those who enable the group to undermine the Lebanese state and threaten prospects for lasting peace.”
Hezbollah was founded in 1982 with Iranian backing during Lebanon’s civil war and Israel’s military presence in southern Lebanon. Over the decades, it has grown into both a powerful Shiite political movement and an armed terrorist militia group, often described as Iran’s most important proxy force in the Middle East. The United States designates Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, accusing it of carrying out attacks, destabilizing Lebanon, threatening Israel, and operating a global fundraising and smuggling network.
The group’s refusal to disarm has remained one of Lebanon’s deepest political crises. While Beirut’s government has repeatedly faced international calls to assert full sovereignty over its territory, Hezbollah has maintained an independent military force outside state control, complicating peace efforts and drawing Lebanon deeper into regional conflicts.
Washington’s latest sanctions signal that the Trump administration intends to keep financial pressure on Hezbollah and its backers as Lebanon faces renewed demands to restore state authority and prevent the country from remaining a battleground for Iranian influence.
