Democrats Moving Sharply Away from Israel According to Latest AP Poll

(Worthy News) – A new AP-NORC poll has put numbers behind a political earthquake long felt by Israel’s supporters: the Democratic Party’s base is turning sharply against the Jewish state. After nearly two years of war following Hamas’ October 7 massacre, Democratic voters are no longer merely criticizing Israeli policy; growing numbers now believe America is too supportive of Israel, too unsupportive of the Palestinians, and willing to embrace accusations against Israel that Republicans overwhelmingly reject.

The poll, conducted in mid-June and released this week, found that 58 percent of Democrats now say U.S. support for Israel is too strong, up from 45 percent in January 2024. Sixty-two percent of Democrats say Washington is not supportive enough of the Palestinians, up from 49 percent over the same period. Roughly one-third of all Americans said Israel’s military actions in Gaza amount to genocide, including about half of Democrats, while Republicans overwhelmingly rejected that charge.

The numbers confirm what Israel’s supporters have watched unfold since Hamas’ October 7, 2023, terrorist attack: support for Israel is no longer a stable bipartisan assumption in American politics.

Republicans have moved in the opposite direction. According to the poll, 61 percent of Republicans now say U.S. support for Israel is “about right,” a sharp rise from 33 percent in January 2024. That shift reflects a GOP base that continues to see Israel as a strategic ally, a democratic partner in the Middle East, and, for many evangelical Christians, a nation tied to the promises of Scripture.

The poll also found deep divisions among Jewish Americans themselves. AP reported that Jewish adults remain split by party, generation, and religious identity, with religious Jews generally more supportive of Israel’s military actions than secular Jews.

The political consequences are already visible. In New York, CBS News projected that former city comptroller Brad Lander defeated pro-Israel Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman in the Democratic primary for New York’s 10th Congressional District. CBS also reported that three candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, won their primaries, marking a major victory for the progressive left.

Jewish Insider reported this week that top Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, were noncommittal when asked whether the next Democratic platform should include language supporting Israel’s security.

The Democratic shift did not begin in the streets or on college campuses alone. It was also reflected in policy. In March 2024, the Biden administration abstained on U.N. Security Council Resolution 2728, allowing a Gaza ceasefire resolution to pass. In May 2024, the administration paused a shipment of 2,000-pound and 500-pound bombs to Israel over concerns about Israel’s planned operation in Rafah. Biden also signed Executive Order 14115, creating a sanctions framework targeting people accused of undermining peace and security in Judea and Samaria, also known internationally as the West Bank.

The AP-NORC poll did not create the fracture. It measured it. And the numbers now point to a sobering reality: the Democratic Party’s base is moving away from Israel at the very moment the Jewish state remains surrounded by enemies determined to destroy it.

For Bible-believing Christians, the growing hostility toward Israel also carries prophetic weight. The prophet Jeremiah spoke of a day when God would regather His people from the nations, first sending “fishers” and then “hunters” to drive them out from the lands where they had been scattered (Jeremiah 16:14–16).

For generations, many Jews returned to Israel by choice, drawn by promise, identity, and longing. But Scripture also warns that pressure, persecution, and rising hatred among the nations would become part of the final regathering. As antisemitism rises in the West and political support for Israel fractures, Jeremiah’s words are no longer distant theology. They are beginning to read like a headline.
