India: Hindu Extremists Pass Laws Restricting Christianity
By Joseph DeCaro, Worthy News Correspondent
NEW DELHI (Worthy News)– Indian village councils have just passed new laws making Christian prayer, meetings and even evangelism illegal in 50 towns, according to Christian Headlines.
Though India’s constitution supposedly guarantees freedom of religion, state authorities in Chhattisgarh still permitted the passage of the restrictive resolutions.
“In some places, the passing of the resolution has been followed by attacks on pastors and pulling down of village churches,” said Aneesh Andrews, Methodist district superintendent for the area.
Groups are calling on the government to stop further persecution of religious minorities.
“The government must reverse the decisions of these [villages] immediately to restore the confidence of the Christian community in the state,” said Vijayesh Lal, the national director of the Religious Liberty Commission of India.
