Persecution in India gets congressional response

By Joseph DeCaro, Worthy News Correspondent

(Worthy News) – A bipartisan congressional letter was sent last week to Prime Minister Modi requesting that he strongly condemn the persecution of India’s religious minorities and to uphold the rule of law.

According to International Christian Concern, the letter was signed by eight senators and 26 representatives from both parties along with the support of the Jubilee Campaign, Christian Solidarity Worldwide and the 21st Century Wilberforce Initiative.

Last March, human rights groups in India documented more than 600 violent attacks against religious minorities in 10 months that resulted in 43 deaths. There was also a rise in violence by radical Hindu nationalist groups that coincided with the election of the Modi government.

Hindu nationalist groups have strong ties with Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party; the groups have been emboldened by BJP’s electoral victories as well as Modi’s own reluctance to condemn much less acknowledge the violence against India’s religious minorities.
