Egypt: Reconciliation denys justice to Christians

(Worthy News) – In Egypt, so-called reconciliation meetings often intimidate Coptic Christians into surrendering their legal rights while their Muslim assailants avoid any punishment for their violence.
According to Barnabas Aid, reconciliation meetings are often used in lieu of judicial procedures when Muslims violate Copts or their property. During these meetings, disputes are usually resolved by insisting that Coptic victim don’t press charges to help diffuse an already volatile situation.
Most Christian minorities don’t object to forced reconciliation for fear of reprisals against them by Egypt’s Muslim majority.
Coptic Archbishop Makarius of Minya once said that having Christians participate in reconciliation sessions is meaningless unless the law has first been applied.
