(Worthy News) – Iran has released U.S. Navy veteran Michael White who was detained in the Islamic nation for nearly two years, his mother confirmed.

“I am blessed to announce that the nightmare is over, and my son is safely on his way home,” added Joanne White.

“For the past 683 days, my son, Michael, has been held hostage in Iran by the IRGC, and I have been living a nightmare,” she said, referring to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. “The nightmare is over.”

Michael White, from the U.S. city of Imperial Beach in California, began making his way home Thursday with the first leg on a Swiss government aircraft, according to U.S. officials.

His release ended a long ordeal that began when Iranian authorities detained White in July 2018. It happened while White visited a woman who he had met online and fallen in love with.

He was convicted of insulting Iran’s supreme leader and posting private information online and was sentenced to a decade in prison. The 48-year old White, a cancer patient, had reportedly been infected with the coronavirus while incarcerated in Iran.

He was freed a day after an Iranian scientist, who was held in the United States, returned to Iran. American officials claimed the two cases were not linked.

But media reports said Iranian officials suggested last month that once the scientist, Sirous Asgari, was back in Iran, they would look favorably at permitting White to return to the U.S.
