(Worthy News) – A powerful storm bearing down on the Bahamas was officially declared a hurricane late Thursday night, after it caused power outage and downpours in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, Fox News reports. The US National Hurricane Center declared Isaias a Category 1 hurricane when it reached maximum sustained winds of 80 mph.

According to the Hurricane Center, the center of Isaias was some 70 miles east-southeast of Great Inagua Island in the southeastern Bahamas by late Thursday, Fox News reported.
In an advisory, the Hurricane Center said: “There is a risk of impacts from winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surge along portions of the U.S. East Coast beginning this weekend in Florida and spreading northward to the Carolinas and southern mid-Atlantic states early next week.”

As Isaias traveled northwest at 18 mph, the Hurricane Center forecast it would arrive near southeastern Bahamas overnight Thursday and arrive close to central Bahamas late Friday.
It is forecast Isaias will then travel near or over the northwest Bahamas and move close to south Florida on Saturday, Fox News said.
