(Worthy News) – The Abortion Care Network has reported that 127 US abortion clinics have closed since 2015, the Christian Post reports. The ACN report suggests most of these clinics closed because of financial constraints and pro-life laws.

While it increased slightly in 2018, the number of abortions carried out in 2017 was the lowest it had been since the Roe v. Wade US Supreme Court decision of 1973. A majority (58%) of abortions in the US are carried out by independent clinics, the ACN report said. Planned Parenthood carries out a further 37% and doctors and hospitals conduct 4%.

State and local governments have passed 479 pro-life laws since 2011; there is now only one abortion clinic left in the states of Mississippi, West Virginia, Missouri, North Dakota and South Dakota, the Christian Post reports.

In an interview with the Christian Post, Michael New, a Charlotte Lozier Institute associate scholar, said: “I think [lower abortion numbers are] because of three possible reasons. Pro-lifers are changing hearts and minds, pregnancy help centers are helping women or we’re passing pro-life laws. I think it’s all three.”

According to the ACN report, since 2012 there has been a 34% decrease in the number of US abortion clinics in operation. As at November, 337 independent clinics remain open, the ACN report said.
