(Worthy News) – A new bill introduced to Congress would ban biological males from participating in girls’ and women’s sports, Christian Headlines reports. Proposed by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), the legislation would clarify that the athletics clause found in Title IX of The Education Amendments of 1972 refers only to biological sex and does not include gender identity.

A current law that prohibits discrimination in education on the grounds of sex, Title IX states: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity.”

The issue of Sen. Lee’s bill arises as President Biden recently signed an executive order stating his administration understands Title IX to include sexual orientation and gender identity within the meaning of the word “sex,” Christian Headlines reports. During a hearing before senators, Biden’s Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said he believes biological boys who identify as girls have the right to participate in girls’ sports.

In a press release, Lee’s office said his bill would confirm that the meaning of “sex” in the Title IX clause on sports is “based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”

Known as the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, Lee’s bill has nine co-sponsors, Christian Headlines reports.
