(Worthy News) – U.S.President Joe Biden says the United States will cut emissions by half by the end of the decade due to a transition to ‘green energy.’

His announcement came as the online Earth Day summit was underway attended by some 40 world leaders, including from heavily polluting China and Russia.

The U.S. wants to slash its CO2 emissions by 50 percent in 2030 compared to those emitted in 2005.

Biden’s announcement followed the cancellation on his first day in office of a pipeline that would have shipped 830,000 barrels per day of oil from Alberta, Canada, to Nebraska.

Opponents of the Keystone XL pipeline say it would carry carbon-heavy oil and hamper developments toward cleaner energy.

Pipeline supporters counter that the closure cost thousands of jobs directly and indirectly. They also warn that anti-fossil fuel activists pressuring Biden should not have applauded his move.

Neighboring Canada will not stop extracting oil from the tar sands of northern Alberta. Canada is due to use existing pipelines to reach the Pacific Ocean, where damage from a potential spill would be harder to address, commentators argue.
