(Worthy News) – Israel’s outgoing Prime Minister and leader of the Yesh Atid party Yair Lapid has called on Israelis to join this weekend’s organized rallies in protest against incoming Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition government, i24 News reports.

Lapid and other opposition leaders accuse Netanyahu of giving Israel over to the ideologies of “extreme and wild” right-wing factions: Netanyahu is signing coalition agreements with highly controversial far-right religious parties that will have unprecedented power over the judiciary, the military, and the education system, Lapid alleged.

Earlier this week, opposition leaders announced they are presenting a “united front against the attacks on the justice system, the education system, [Israel’s army], and democracy as a whole,” i24 said.

Accordingly, Israel’s National Unity alliance led by outgoing Defense Minister Benny Gantz has announced “The Struggle for the Character of the State” forum.

In his rallying call for Israelis to take to the streets in protest, Lapid said: “We will fight for our country. It won’t happen in a day, but we’re not afraid, and we won’t be silent. We’re done being upset by the outcome of the election.”

Telling Yesh Atid supporters they must work to “stop the insanity,” Lapid attested: “We’re going to fight for our country, for the education of our children, for the IDF and its values, and for democracy.”
