SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA (Worthy News) – Seven people were killed, and one was critically injured in a shooting across two locations in the U.S. state of California on Monday, police confirmed.

The shootings in the city of Half Moon Bay were the second mass killings to hit California in as many days.

San Mateo Sheriff Christina Corpus said police detained a suspect, 67-year-old Zhao Chunli, of Half Moon Bay, shortly after 4 p.m. local time.

Four victims were first found dead on San Mateo Road, and three additional victims were later discovered at a second site on the 2100 block of Cabrillo Highway South, Corpus talks media. Zhao is believed to be a worker at a mushroom farm where one of the shootings took place, according to Corpus.

A motive or connections between the suspect and victims was still unknown, the sheriff said, adding investigators were interviewing him as night fell.

The shooting comes after the weekend’s deadly mass shooting in Monterey Park, in Southern California, that left at least 11 people dead, noted California Governor Gavin Newsom.

The governor wrote on the social media network Twitter: “At the hospital meeting with victims of a mass shooting when I get pulled away to be briefed about another shooting. This time in Half Moon Bay.”

It is “Tragedy upon tragedy,” Newsom added.

Josh Becker, a state representative from the Half Moon Bay area where Monday’s shootings happened, said that “Gun violence has come to our district today.”

Becker pledged “to do whatever” he “can to support the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department and Half Moon Bay city officials during this tragic event.” He added: “We will continue to monitor this situation. My thoughts go out to all affected.”
