KYIV (Worthy News) – Local authorities in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region have declared Monday an official day of mourning after a Russian attack killed seven people, including a 23-day-old baby girl, her 12-year-old brother, and their parents. “Today, the Kherson region shuddered from terrible news,” Governor Oleksandr Prokudin wrote on the social media network Telegram shortly after Sunday’s artillery strike.

“Bombs” hit their family home in the village of Shyroka Balka in Kherson, Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said. Besides the family, the dead included another village resident and two men in the neighboring town of Stanislav, according to authorities.

Kherson was one of four regions in Ukraine that Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed to have annexed last year.

Parts of Ukraine were on high alert Sunday after a Russian ballistic missile threat was declared for eight regions across eastern Ukraine. The Ukrainian air force is warning the east and southern areas of the country of a ballistic missile threat.

However, inside Russia, residents faced Ukrainian attacks Sunday, with three civilians injured in the Kursk region from shells coming over the Ukrainian border, the regional governor said.

Roman Starovoit stressed that Ukraine was behind the shelling. Kyiv has not claimed responsibility, and reporters said it was unclear from whom the shelling originated.

The tensions came as a Russian warship fired warning shots at a Palau-flagged cargo ship in the southwestern Black Sea on Sunday. It marked the first time Russia fired on a merchant ship beyond Ukraine since exiting a United Nations-brokered grain deal last month.

HALTING TRAFFIC

It marked the first time Russia fired on a merchant ship beyond Ukraine since exiting a United Nations-brokered grain deal last month.

Authorities also briefly halted traffic on the Russian-built Kerch bridge connecting occupied Crimea with Russia – but did not provide a reason. But media said it came one day after Russian air defense thwarted three Ukrainian missile attacks.

Also, Yuriy Malashko, head of the Zaporizhzhia regional military administration, warned residents of the threat of Russian ballistic missiles in Zaporizhzhia and through the region.

It was unclear why the threat emerged as the Zaporizhzhia region also where Russia’s military occupied Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

As tensions rose, Germany announced it would deliver a Luna New Generation drone system to Ukraine. Germany’s Bild am Sonntag newspaper said the equipment will include a ground control station with several drones, a launch catapult, and military trucks.

There was no immediate known reaction from Russia, which has made clear that the West’s growing involvement in the war in Ukraine could destabilize Europe.
