Water level in Biblical Euphrates River falls to historic dangerous low

(Worthy News) – Referenced across the Bible in Scriptures ranging from Genesis to Revelation, the Euphrates River in Syria has recently dried up to such an extent as to trigger multiple humanitarian crises in the region, Israel365 News reports.

Lowered water levels and nearby Turkey’s reported release of sewage into the Euphrates have caused toxic stagnant water pools to develop with a resultant increase in waterborne diseases.

The Euphrates stretches for 1,700 miles, and is the longest and one of the most historically significant rivers in Western Asia. The Euphrates and the Tigris Rivers in Iraq represent vital water sources for around 90 million people. Iraq’s Ministry of Water Resources has stated that urgent action must be taken to prevent the country’s two main rivers from drying up by 2040.

The construction of Syria’s largest dam, the Tabqa Dam, located 25 miles upstream from Raqqa, has been found to have caused a considerable increase in the salinity of the Euphrates water. This salinity also impacts Lake Assad, Syria’s largest reservoir, which was built due to having the Tabqa Dam in place. Moreover, the Euphrates water level at the site of the Dam receded to a record low point in the last three weeks.

Meanwhile, the Alouk water station, the primary source of water in northeast Syria’s agricultural area, has been out of order since 23 June: this has affected nearly one million people. “Dwindling water resources threatens to worsen food insecurity in Syria, creating pressure that could contribute to new waves of refugees leaving the country,” Israel365 noted in its report.
