CAIRO/JERUSALEM (Worthy News) – An Egyptian policeman opened fire at a group of Israeli tourists, killing two holidaymakers and their local guide in Egypt’s coastal city of Alexandria, government sources confirmed.

A third Israeli tourist was wounded in Sunday’s attack, Egyptian security sources said.

The Extra News channel, which has ties to Egyptian security agencies, said the suspected shooter was arrested.

Egypt’s Interior Ministry pointed out the shooting at Alexandria’s famed Pompey’s Pillar—a Roman triumphal column—earlier on Sunday.

Officers soon cordoned off the site of the attack and have launched an investigation, witnesses said.

No more details about the suspect and victims were not immediately released.

DEEPER MISGIVINGS

The incident, confirmed by Israel’s foreign ministry, came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his nation is “at war” following a coordinated attack by Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip on Saturday.

At least 350 people were reportedly killed in Israel, while another 313 died in Gaza, with fighting continuing Sunday as Israel’s army struggled to regain control of infiltrated areas.

Sunday’s shootings in Alexandria highlighted lingering animosity in Egypt toward Israel despite a peace deal agreed to by the two nations decades earlier.

The Alexandria attack “may be related to ongoing hostilities in Gaza and Israel,” the United States Embassy in Cairo said.

It urged American citizens in Egypt to “exercise increased security awareness and precautions.”

This wasn’t the first police attack targeting Israelis. In June, an Egyptian police conscript killed three Israeli soldiers near the two countries’ border. Egypt said he exchanged fire with the soldiers while chasing drug smugglers, but Israel said it was “a terrorist attack.”
