MADRID (Worthy News) – Up to one million people gathered in central Madrid against Spain’s socialist prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, after he was sworn in Friday amid anger over his perceived pro-Palestinian views and his deal with separatists to stay in power.

Sánchez secured a second term in office after winning an investiture vote the previous day that came almost four months after July’s inconclusive snap general election.

Although the conservative People’s Party (PP) narrowly beat Sánchez’s Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) in the election, it could not secure the parliamentary support to form a government.

However, the PSOE and its partners in the leftwing Sumar alliance managed to cobble together the necessary votes by enlisting the support of the two main Catalan pro-independence parties.

In exchange for offering an amnesty for those involved in the unsuccessful, unilateral push to secede from Spain six years ago, he was offered political support.

There was also anger Saturday among commentators about his government’s perceived pro-Palestine views at a time when Israel fights a war against Hamas after it killed 1,200 people in Israel in October 7.

The anger became clear Saturday when the central government’s delegation to the region said 170,000 protested against Sanchez making it more than twice as big as the demonstration held in the capital last Sunday.

Organizers put attendance at “close to a million”.
