(Worthy News) – A distress call from a commercial tanker seized by armed individuals in the Gulf of Aden prompted a response from a U.S. Navy warship. Thanks to the swift action by the U.S. Navy, the vessel is now secure, U.S. officials said on Sunday.

A U.S. official, speaking anonymously to Reuters, stated that the USS Mason warship responded to the distress call, and successfully liberated the tanker from a small group of armed hijackers. The hijackers have been captured and are currently undergoing interrogation.

A high-ranking U.S. official informed Fox News Chief National Security Correspondent Jennifer Griffin that five gunmen were engaged in the attempted hijacking.

According to the official speaking to Griffin, crew members of the Central Park tanker secured themselves in the ship’s safe room for safety. The gunmen were unsuccessful in breaching the door.

The hijackers left the vessel and were en route to the shores of Yemen when the U.S. Navy pursued and apprehended them. Warning shots were discharged by the U.S. Navy personnel, accompanied by the presence of a U.S. helicopter gunship providing cover.

Griffin reported that the official mentioned a Japanese destroyer assisted the U.S. Navy, while two Chinese Navy warships in the vicinity did not provide assistance.
