(Worthy News) – The United States now boasts the highest-ever proportion of immigrants in its history, constituting 15% of the population, according to a recent report from the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS). The study relied on data from the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey (CPS), revealing that the total foreign-born or immigrant population approached nearly 50 million as of October 2023, breaking U.S. records.

Since President Biden assumed office in 2021, the immigrant population has surged by 4.5 million, roughly equivalent to the entire population of states such as Oregon or Oklahoma.

Between January 2021 and October 2023, there have been approximately eight million “encounters” at U.S. borders. This figure set a record for a 34-month period, although in the past, they were referred to as “apprehensions,” signifying a slightly different concept, according to the CIS report.

More troubling are records from the courts and other data available on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) websites suggest that approximately 2.6 million (potentially 2.7 million) inadmissible aliens have been released into the country since the onset of the Biden administration, the report stated.

Also contributing to the illegal immigration surge is a notable decrease in interior enforcement. During the initial two years of the Biden administration, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) removals from within the country were less than half the previous years’ figures. In FY 2020, 186,000 aliens were removed, which dropped to 59,000 in FY 2021 and only slightly increased to 72,000 in FY 2022.

Congress Seeks to Act

With the current spike in illegal immigration, Congress is seeking to curb the rise by linking border security measures to aid packages for Ukraine and Israel.

Last Wednesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) privately told Republican Senators that he needs substantial border security changes as part of the Biden administration’s overseas war funding package.

“We’re not going to try to secure other countries and not secure ours,” Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) stated earlier this month.
