(Worthy News) – Israel is preparing for a significant legal battle at The Hague’s International Court of Justice, where it faces charges from South Africa of perpetrating genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.  The case asserts that Israel’s military campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip amounts to genocide. Israel has strongly refuted these allegations of genocide.

The petition from South Africa focuses on the Israel Defense Forces operations in Gaza, depicting them as a deliberate effort to annihilate a substantial portion of the Palestinian population. On the other hand, Israel has unequivocally dismissed these claims, with one of its ministers denouncing the accusations as a “blood libel.”

Prof. Malcolm Shaw, a distinguished British authority in international law, will represent Israel. The proceedings will involve a panel of 15 judges, with Aharon Barak, a former President of the Supreme Court, serving as Israel’s representative in the court.

During a visit to Tel Aviv on Tuesday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken characterized the case as “meritless.”

“It is particularly galling, given that those who are attacking Israel — Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, as well as their supporter Iran — continue to call for the annihilation of Israel and the mass murder of Jews,” Blinken stated.

The foreign ministry of the Palestinian Authority has called on the court to “immediately take action to protect the Palestinian people and call on Israel, the occupying power, to halt its onslaught against the Palestinian people, in order to ensure an objective legal resolution.”

Israeli authorities maintain that this war, anticipated to persist throughout 2024, is vital for the nation’s security.
