(Worthy News) – Iran announced on Monday plans to conduct joint naval drills with Russia and China before the year’s end, amid rising regional tensions due to attacks on commercial shipping by Yemen-based Houthi forces and U.S. airstrikes on Iranian-backed militia groups in Iraq and Syria over the weekend.

On Monday, Iran’s naval chief announced that additional countries have been invited to participate in the forthcoming naval exercises. Iran has voiced its objection to the U.S. strikes, which targeted locations, including those utilized by operatives of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Rear Adm. Shahram Irani stated that the purpose of conducting this exercise “will be carried out with the aim of protecting the security of the region and common interests” according to the Iranian-owned Islamic Republic News Agency.

In March 2023, naval vessels from Russia, China, and Iran participated in “Security Bond 2023,” a collaborative naval drill conducted in the Sea of Oman.

Over the weekend, U.S. Central Command forces executed a strike on a Houthi land attack cruise missile site in Yemen. U.S. military officials stated that the targeted site was poised to launch attacks on ships in the Red Sea, posing “an imminent threat to U.S. Navy ships and merchant vessels in the region.”

Iranian officials have labeled the strikes against Houthi forces as “a repeated violation of Yemen’s territorial integrity and a significant infringement of international law.”
