(Worthy News)—If re-elected, former President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that the U.S. would stay in NATO as long as European countries pay their ‘fair share’ and ‘play fair.’

In an interview with conservative British politician Nigel Farage, Trump remarked, “NATO has to treat the U.S. fairly because if not for the United States, NATO literally doesn’t even exist.”

Trump stated his belief that the U.S. “was paying 90% of NATO,” which he described as “the most unfair thing.”

When questioned whether the U.S. would assist NATO countries under attack during his presidency, Trump confirmed it would, adding, “Yeah. But you know, the United States should pay its fair share, not everybody else’s fair share.”

“We’re not going to defend you if you’re not paying your bills,” the former president said.

“We have an ocean in between some problems … we have a nice big, beautiful ocean,” Trump added. “[NATO] is more important for [European countries], they will take an advantage.”

Trump’s occasional warnings of potentially dismantling NATO have become a point of contention in the 2024 election. President Joe Biden and the Democrats have criticized him for jeopardizing global stability.
