JERUSALEM (Worthy News) – Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Iran’s capital, Tehran, shortly after an Israeli strike killed the most senior commander of Hamas ally Hezbollah in Lebanon.

In a statement, Hamas, deemed a terrorist group by Israel, said it mourned the death of Haniyeh, who was killed in “a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran.”

One of his bodyguards was also killed, Hamas added. “The cause is under investigation and will be announced soon.”

Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard also announced early Wednesday that Haniyeh had been assassinated in Tehran.

In a separate statement, Hamas said Haniyeh was killed after he attended the inauguration of the new Iranian president.

The killing followed the announcement by Israel’s military that it killed Hezbollah’s most senior commander, Fuad Shukr, in an airstrike on the Lebanese capital Beirut on Tuesday.

Shukr was a close aide to Hassan Nasrallah, a Lebanese cleric and the secretary-general of Hezbollah.

He was killed in a strike that left a significant hole in the side of an eight-story apartment building in southern Beirut, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said late Tuesday.

The attack was in retaliation to the weekend attack on Majdal Shams in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights over the weekend that killed at least 12 Israeli Druze children and teenagers, Worthy News reported.
