(Worthy News) – Chinese espionage activities are on the rise, with the Communist regime systematically targeting overseas dissidents in the U.S. and increasing cases of sensitive information theft and intelligence gathering, according to a House subcommittee report.

The recent report titled “China Threat Snapshot” by the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Law Enforcement, and Intelligence reveals that Chinese Communist Party (CPP)-related threats to the homeland have proliferated in recent years. It is increasingly evident that China’s oppressive reach extends far beyond its borders to actively oppose democracy, silence dissent, and conduct espionage against the United States.

“The Chinese Communist Party is not satisfied with destroying freedom and repressing its citizens within its own borders. Beijing has continually encroached upon American sovereignty to spy, intimidate, and harass not only defectors, but even American citizens,” Chairman Mark Green (R-Tn) stated. “To be clear, our adversary is not the Chinese people, but the threat that comes from the tyrannical regime that oppresses its own people, commits genocide, censors speech, and seeks to undermine representative government. It is important we remain clear-eyed about the threat the CCP poses to the security of the American people so we are prepared to counter its malign influence at every turn.”

The report detailed that federal authorities have recorded over 55 cases of China-related espionage across 20 states between January 2021 and this month.

“The government of China and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) seriously threaten the economic well-being, homeland security, and democratic values of the United States,” the report stated. It added, “Cases of Chinese espionage throughout the U.S. have expanded rapidly with Chinese nationals and non-Chinese individuals acting on behalf of the People’s Republic of China allegedly committing a variety of forms of espionage including but not limited to, government, military, and economic espionage.”

The report stated that between February 2021 and October 2023, over 55 CCP-related espionage cases involving the transmission of sensitive military information, theft of trade secrets, execution of transnational repression schemes, and obstruction of justice were identified in 20 states.

Approximately 80% of economic espionage prosecutions were linked to actions benefiting the Chinese government, and about 60% of all trade secret theft cases were carried out by Chinese agents.

According to statistics provided by the subcommittee, China’s theft of billions of dollars worth of U.S. intellectual property has had a profound economic impact on American families. This large-scale intellectual property theft is estimated to have cost each American household between $4,000 and $6,000.
