Sweden, Finland Urge Public to Prepare for Potential War As Major Telecommunication Cable Severed

(Worthy News) – Sweden began issuing millions of pamphlets to its citizens on preparing for a potential war, and Finland unveiled a new website aimed at crisis preparedness on Monday. This activity coincided with an incident today involving a major fiber optic cable, believed to have been cut, between Finland and Germany.

Starting Monday, Sweden began distributing the 32-page booklet “If Crisis or War Comes” to 5.2 million households. The pamphlet, advises on preparation for war, natural disasters, and cyber or terror attacks.

The pamphlet states: “Military threat levels are increasing. We must be prepared for the worst-case scenario — an armed attack on Sweden.” It advises residents to stock up on nonperishable food and water, keep cash on hand, and cultivate fruit and vegetables in their gardens.

Last January, Swedish Civil Defense Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin stirred concerns by warning “there could be war in Sweden.” Shortly after, Sweden’s then army chief Micael Byden further heightened alarm by stating “Swedes have to mentally prepare for war.”

In a related development, the Finnish government launched a website to consolidate information on preparedness for various crises including war.

Meanwhile, a major fiberoptic cable under the Baltic Sea from Finland to Germany went offline on Monday, according to the Finnish state-controlled cyber security and telecoms company, Cinia.

A physical inspection has not yet been conducted, but the abrupt nature of the incident suggests it was completely severed by an external force.

Germany and Finland’s foreign ministers expressed that they were “deeply concerned” and noted it “immediately raises suspicions of intentional damage.”

According to a joint statement issued: “Our European security is not only under threat from Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, but also from hybrid warfare by malicious actors.

“Safeguarding our shared critical infrastructure is vital to our security and the resilience of our societies.”

Authorities hope to repair the underground telecommunications cable within two weeks.

Two years ago, the Nord Stream gas pipeline from Russia to Germany was damaged by explosions, but authorities are still investigating and have not yet identified a clear perpetrator.
