At Least Nine Dead After UPS Cargo Plane Crashes, Explodes in Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, USA (Worthy News) – Officials say at least nine people were killed and more than a dozen injured after a United Parcel Service (UPS) cargo plane crashed and exploded shortly after takeoff from Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport in the U.S. state of Kentucky.

UPS — one of the world’s largest logistics and parcel-delivery companies, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia — confirmed that all three crew members aboard the wide-body freighter were among those killed in the late Tuesday crash.

Local authorities said at least six others on the ground also lost their lives, and 11 more were injured when the aircraft erupted into a fireball after striking warehouses near the airport perimeter.

Louisville, a city of about 620,000 residents along the Ohio River in the central United States, is home to UPS’s main global air-cargo hub, making the crash particularly disruptive for international freight and overnight deliveries.

FIREBALL AFTER TAKE-OFF

The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 freighter, bound for Honolulu, took off around 5:13 p.m. local time before veering left and descending rapidly.

Witnesses and video footage showed flames trailing from the left wing moments before impact.

“The plane appeared to lose power on one side and banked sharply before it exploded,” explained Louisville Fire Chief Brian O’Neill, confirming that firefighters battled intense blazes in nearby industrial buildings for hours.

Preliminary NTSB findings suggest a possible engine separation and onboard fuel fire, though officials stressed that no conclusions have been reached.

GLOBAL FREIGHT IMPACT

The crash temporarily shut down operations at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, UPS’s largest global hub.

Hundreds of flights were diverted or delayed, disrupting international parcel traffic across North America, Europe, and Asia.

“This is a dark day for our UPS Air Family,” said UPS CEO Carol Tomé in a statement. “We are cooperating fully with authorities and focusing on supporting the families of those lost.”

UPS operates one of the world’s largest cargo fleets, with more than 290 aircraft serving over 220 countries and territories.

The company, founded in 1907 in Seattle, Washington, has grown into one of the world’s largest courier and freight companies, delivering over 24 million packages daily worldwide.

Its Louisville air hub, known as Worldport, handles millions of parcels each night and serves as a key node in the global supply chain.

The Louisville disaster is the deadliest UPS aviation accident since a 2010 crash in Dubai that killed two pilots.

Another fatal crash in 2013 near Birmingham, Alabama, also claimed two crew members ‘ lives when a UPS MD-11 struck trees on approach.

MAINTENANCE LOGS UNDER REVIEW

Aviation experts said investigators will examine maintenance logs, fuel systems, and engine history, noting that MD-11 freighters — while widely used — require precise handling during takeoff and landing.

The crash is under active investigation by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Officials cautioned that the death toll could rise as rescue and recovery operations continue.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear expressed condolences to the victims’ families and thanked first responders for their “courage under extraordinary danger.”

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said the city would hold a vigil “for those who perished serving global commerce and our community.”

Emergency crews have secured the crash site, and federal investigators are expected to release a preliminary report within 30 days.
