U.S.-Brokered Talks Yield Largest Prisoner Exchange in Five Months as Ukraine-Russia Negotiations Continue

(Worthy News) – U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announced on Feb. 5 that Ukraine and Russia have agreed to exchange 314 prisoners, marking the first such swap in five months and the most tangible outcome yet from U.S.-brokered talks held in Abu Dhabi. The exchange followed multiple days of trilateral negotiations involving delegations from Washington, Kyiv, and Moscow.
“This outcome was achieved from peace talks that have been detailed and productive,” Witkoff wrote in a post on X, adding that while significant work remains, the agreement shows that sustained diplomatic engagement is delivering concrete results. He said discussions will continue, with additional progress anticipated in the coming weeks, and thanked the United Arab Emirates and President Donald Trump for their roles in facilitating the talks.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said 157 Russian service members were returned in exchange for 157 Ukrainian prisoners of war. Moscow also claimed that three Russian civilians from the Kursk region were released. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the exchange, saying the returnees included soldiers, sergeants, officers, and civilians, many of whom had been held since 2022.
Officials on both sides described the Abu Dhabi discussions as constructive. Russian presidential representative Kirill Dmitriev, who attended the talks, told Russia’s state-run TASS news agency that there is “good, positive movement forward,” claiming progress has drawn opposition from what he described as European and British “warmongers.” Dmitriev also said talks were underway to restore U.S.-Russia economic relations, including through a Russian-American Economic Cooperation Group working with the Trump administration.
Ukraine’s top negotiator, Rustem Umerov, said working-group discussions following the trilateral meeting were “substantive and productive,” focused on practical steps. Zelenskyy echoed that assessment in his nightly address, stressing that Ukraine’s goal remains a real and lasting end to the war, backed by concrete security guarantees and sustained pressure on Russia.
Despite the diplomatic activity, fighting continues along the roughly 1,000-kilometer front line across eastern and southern Ukraine. Russia has intensified attacks on Ukraine’s power grid, while overnight drone and missile strikes injured civilians in Kyiv and surrounding regions. Ukrainian officials said Russia launched 183 drones and two ballistic missiles in one recent barrage, while Moscow claimed its air defenses intercepted dozens of Ukrainian drones.
Core disagreements remain unresolved, particularly Russia’s demand that Ukraine relinquish the entire Donbas industrial region. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow views control of Donbas as a “very important condition” for any settlement, a demand Kyiv continues to reject. Zelenskyy has repeatedly warned against any deal that rewards aggression or allows Russia to regroup for future attacks.
Humanitarian costs continue to mount. Zelenskyy said approximately 55,000 Ukrainian troops have been killed since the invasion began nearly four years ago, with many more missing. The United Nations estimates nearly 15,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed and more than 40,000 injured, while Human Rights Watch reported a 31 percent increase in civilian casualties over the past year.
The Abu Dhabi talks also included senior U.S. figures, among them President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe Alexus Grynkewich. While officials offered no details on breakthroughs beyond the prisoner exchange, U.S. officials said negotiations will continue as Washington seeks to steer both sides toward a broader settlement.
