Brazil Court Sentences Bolsonaro’s Son Over Alleged US Lobbying Campaign

BRASILIA, BRAZIL (Worthy News) – Brazil’s Supreme Court has sentenced Eduardo Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, to four years and two months in prison after finding him guilty of seeking U.S. intervention in legal proceedings involving his father.

The ruling marks the latest chapter in a political and legal saga that has deeply divided Latin America’s largest nation.

Prosecutors said Eduardo Bolsonaro, who currently resides in the United States, lobbied members of U.S. President Donald J. Trump’s administration to pressure Brazilian authorities through sanctions against Supreme Court justices and tariffs on Brazilian goods.

Brazil’s prosecutor general argued that the efforts were aimed at influencing the trial of Jair Bolsonaro, who was convicted of plotting a coup after losing the 2022 presidential election to current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

FATHER ALREADY CONVICTED

Jair Bolsonaro, a former army captain who served as president from 2019 to 2022, was sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in prison after being found guilty of involvement in an attempt to overturn the election result.

Eduardo Bolsonaro, a former lawmaker, relocated to the United States in 2025, months before his father’s conviction.

Since then, he has worked to build political support abroad, particularly among conservatives in Washington, for what he calls a campaign to defend constitutional rights and challenge what he describes as judicial overreach in Brazil.

Following Tuesday’s ruling, Eduardo Bolsonaro said he had not been properly notified of the legal proceedings against him.

He has denied attempting to secure his father’s acquittal through foreign pressure, saying his activities were intended to encourage action against Brazilian officials who, in his view, violated the country’s constitution.

ASSETS FROZEN

The latest conviction follows an earlier order by a Supreme Court justice to freeze Eduardo Bolsonaro’s assets and bank accounts.

Authorities alleged that funds sent to him by his father were used to finance lobbying efforts aimed at persuading U.S. officials to intervene on behalf of the Bolsonaro family.

The Bolsonaro camp has rejected those allegations.

Separately, Jair Bolsonaro was placed under house arrest earlier this year due to health concerns after suffering pneumonia and requiring treatment in an intensive care unit.

His lawyers said his ongoing medical problems, many linked to a stabbing attack during the 2018 presidential campaign, justified humanitarian relief.

POLITICAL TENSIONS

The convictions of both Jair and Eduardo Bolsonaro are expected to intensify political tensions in Brazil.

Supporters of the former president argue that the judiciary has overstepped its authority.

Critics, however, say the rulings demonstrate that no one is above the law in a democratic society.

The case is being closely watched internationally as Brazil seeks to move beyond years of political turmoil following one of the most contentious periods in its modern history.
