MEERSTAD, NETHERLANDS (Worthy News) – A Dutch community remained in shock Saturday after a 13-year-old girl was detained following the discovery of her parents’ bodies in their home in the northern Netherlands.

Police said a 53-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman were found dead at a residence in Meerstad, a family-oriented town near the northern city of Groningen, at about 2:45 a.m. Thursday.

Authorities later detained the couple’s 13-year-old daughter in connection with the case, according to Dutch media reports.

Police have not officially confirmed her identity because she is a minor.

INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY

Investigators said a tactical and forensic investigation was continuing and declined to discuss a possible motive or the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The suspect remains in restricted custody, meaning she may only have contact with her lawyer while the investigation continues.

Dutch media reported that the girl allegedly shared images related to the killings with fellow students before her arrest. Police have not confirmed those reports.

A dog found at the home was taken into care after the discovery of the bodies. Police have not commented on reports that the animal may also have been injured.

COMMUNITY IN SHOCK

Residents described the deaths as devastating for Meerstad, a rapidly growing community popular with young families.

“I am shocked and appalled,” one resident told Dutch media. Another neighbor described the victims as “very sweet, quiet people.”

Groningen Mayor Mirjam van ’t Veld called the deaths a “tragic event.”

“My thoughts go out to the family, friends and acquaintances of the couple,” she said.

RARE CASE

The case has attracted nationwide attention in the Netherlands, where homicide rates are among the lowest in Europe and fatal violence involving children is uncommon.

Cases involving a 13-year-old suspected of killing both parents are exceptionally rare in the Netherlands.

Dutch child protection authorities are expected to become involved as investigators seek to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and assess the welfare of the minor.

Police have urged the public not to speculate while the investigation remains ongoing.
