Muslim Mob Attacks Christian Prayer House In West Java, Threatens To Burn It Down

(Worthy News) – A Muslim mob attacked a Christian prayer house in the Hegarmanah Indah Housing Complex in West Java on June 24, demanding that the gathering place be closed and threatening to burn it down, according to local Christian accounts.
Several church members connected to the prayer house were reportedly assaulted during the incident. The attack has renewed concerns over religious freedom in West Java, a province long cited by watchdog groups as one of Indonesia’s most troubled regions for religious intolerance.
Rev. Marudut, the developer of the housing complex, said he had previously donated private land for the construction of mosques and that relations among residents had been peaceful for years. He said unrest only began after a change in leadership within the local neighborhood association.
According to Rev. Marudut, the Christian prayer house was established after the number of Christians living in the housing complex continued to grow. The gathering place was built on private land, he said, as a modest space for worship and prayer.
The incident comes amid broader scrutiny of Indonesia’s protection of religious minorities. The SETARA Institute reported a rise in violations of freedom of religion and belief in 2024, recording 260 incidents and 402 acts of violation nationwide. A previous long-term SETARA study also identified West Java as Indonesia’s leading province for religious-rights violations over a 12-year period.
For Indonesia’s Christian minority, the attack is another reminder that constitutional promises of religious freedom often face pressure at the local level, where mobs, neighborhood authorities, and permit disputes can make even simple worship gatherings a flashpoint.
