WASHINGTON, D.C. (Worthy News) – The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits remained relatively low in early August, offering another sign that widespread layoffs have yet to take hold even as hiring across the U.S. economy remains subdued.

Initial unemployment claims rose by 9,000 to a seasonally adjusted 209,000 for the week ending August 8, according to Labor Department data released Thursday. The four-week moving average remained unchanged at 199,000.

Continuing claims — representing Americans receiving unemployment benefits beyond their first week — fell by 22,000 to 1.777 million, down from a revised 1.799 million the previous week.

The numbers suggest employers are continuing to hold onto workers despite signs that hiring has cooled. Reuters described the current environment as a low-turnover labor market characterized by relatively little hiring or firing.

The latest report follows a surprising July employment report showing the U.S. economy lost 23,000 jobs, while the unemployment rate edged down to 4.1 percent.

Weekly unemployment claims also remain extraordinarily low by historical standards. Claims fell to 187,000 in July, their lowest level since 1969, before moving moderately higher in subsequent weeks.

The relatively stable labor market comes as Federal Reserve officials weigh inflation against signs of softer employment growth. Financial markets have increasingly expected the Fed to leave interest rates unchanged at its September meeting following cooler inflation data and the recent weakness in payrolls.
