(Worthy News) – Americans added another $21 billion in credit card debt during the second quarter of 2026, pushing outstanding balances to roughly $1.26 trillion and bringing consumer borrowing close to its record high.

Credit card balances increased about 1.7% from the previous quarter, reversing the seasonal decline seen earlier this year. In the first quarter, balances had fallen by $25 billion to approximately $1.25 trillion.

The latest Federal Reserve Bank of New York household-credit data shows Americans collectively carrying about $18.8 trillion in household debt. While overall debt remained relatively stable, borrowing increased in several categories, including credit cards, auto loans and home-equity lines of credit.

Auto loan balances climbed another $28 billion to approximately $1.71 trillion, while Americans originated a record $211 billion in new auto loans during the quarter.

Household Finances Remain Under Pressure

The figures offer a mixed picture of the American consumer. Overall delinquency rates edged slightly lower, and New York Fed researchers said new credit-card delinquencies have largely stabilized since 2024. Still, delinquency levels among some younger and lower-income borrowers remain elevated.

For millions of households, credit cards have increasingly become a financial bridge as everyday expenses compete with housing, transportation and other rising costs.

With balances now only about $20 billion below the $1.28 trillion record reached in late 2025, Americans enter the second half of the year carrying one of the largest credit-card burdens ever recorded.
