Rare August Storm Shatters Rainfall Records in Israel, Sends Floodwaters Through Judean Desert

(Worthy News) – A highly unusual midsummer storm swept across parts of Israel on Saturday, August 15, bringing heavy rain to Jerusalem, shattering August rainfall records near the capital, and sending floodwaters through a Judean Desert stream in what meteorologists described as an unprecedented summer event.

Rain began falling in northern Israel during the afternoon before thunderstorms quickly developed around Jerusalem and the surrounding hills. Radar showed an intense storm cell over the capital, producing heavy downpours and localized flooding in several neighborhoods.

Nearby Ma’ale Adumim, just east of Jerusalem, experienced the most dramatic rainfall. An Israel Meteorological Service station measured 11 millimeters — about 0.43 inches — in a single hour, breaking the area’s previous August record. Measurements cited by Israeli media showed the storm ultimately delivered roughly 25 to 26 millimeters, or about one inch, to the area during the event.

The rainfall was particularly remarkable because Israel’s summers are normally almost completely dry. According to historical Israel Meteorological Service data, significant rainfall during July and August is exceptionally uncommon.

Historic Flood in the Judean Desert

Perhaps the most striking scene unfolded east of Jerusalem in the Judean Desert, where runoff suddenly poured through normally dry channels toward the Dead Sea.

Water began rushing through Nahal Og, north of the Dead Sea. Israel Meteorological Service Director Dr. Amir Givati said it was the first flood ever documented there during the summer season, according to i24NEWS.

Authorities had warned of possible flash flooding across the Judean Desert and Dead Sea region as thunderstorms developed. Israel’s Nature and Parks Authority cautioned people against entering desert streambeds while floodwaters were flowing.

The desert’s steep terrain makes even brief rainfall potentially dramatic, as water draining from the Judean hills can rapidly collect in normally dry wadis and race toward the Dead Sea.

Rainfall Almost Unheard of in August

The numbers underline just how unusual Saturday’s weather was.

Rainfall exceeding 20 millimeters during August has been recorded only a few times in Israel since systematic measurements began, including previous events in the Golan Heights, Acre and Kfar Galim.

Jerusalem itself received several millimeters of rain — an extraordinary amount for the height of Israel’s normally bone-dry summer.

What began as an unexpected August shower ultimately became a historic weather event: rain over Jerusalem, broken rainfall records in Ma’ale Adumim, and water suddenly roaring through the ancient wilderness east of the Holy City.
