Taiwan Indicts Nine In AI Server Case As China Showcases Humanoid Robots (Worthy News In-Depth)

BEIJING/TAIPEI (Worthy News) – The American-Chinese race for global dominance in Artificial Intelligence (AI) escalated further Monday, with Taiwan announcing the indictment of nine people over the alleged illegal export of advanced AI servers to China as Beijing showcased increasingly capable humanoid robots.

Among those charged are employees of U.S. technology companies Nvidia, one of the world’s largest makers of data-center chips and AI technology, and Super Micro Computer, a major server manufacturer.

Semiconductor powerhouse Taiwan is the world’s largest producer of advanced chips used in AI applications. Prosecutors this year investigated the suspected illegal export of AI servers—powerful computer systems designed to process artificial intelligence applications—equipped with Nvidia chips.

Washington has imposed restrictions since 2022 making it illegal for certain advanced semiconductors to be exported or sold to China without a license.

Eight people, including an employee of Nvidia’s Taiwan unit and two employees of Super Micro’s Taiwan operation, were charged with breach of trust and document forgery in connection with the alleged illegal export of high-end AI servers, prosecutors in the port city of Keelung said.

SERVERS SENT TO CHINA

A ninth defendant was charged in a related case involving the alleged siphoning of funds from a distributor involved in the transactions, prosecutors said.

The alleged scheme involved making it appear that 130 B300 servers ordered from Super Micro would be installed and used at a rented server facility in Taiwan, with prosecutors saying false end-user documents indicated the servers would remain on the island.

However, 74 of the servers were ultimately exported and delivered to customers in China through routes that included direct shipments as well as transshipments through Indonesia, Japan and Hong Kong, prosecutors said.

The remaining 56 were intended for export to a company in Japan, but Taiwanese customs officials detected irregularities and stopped the shipment, according to prosecutors.

Authorities said the defendants were “fully aware” of rigorous internal export-control procedures at Nvidia and Super Micro but allegedly circumvented them for financial gain.

CHINA SHOWCASES ROBOTS

The indictments came as China demonstrated advances in another increasingly important area of AI development: humanoid robots capable of performing tasks previously reserved for humans.

China’s humanoid robots have shown they can run faster than the fastest humans. Now comes the more consequential test: whether they can reliably handle packaging and warehouse operations while performing precision tasks such as connecting cables.

The five-day World Humanoid Robot Games, which began Saturday in Beijing, combine events modeled on human sports with challenges designed to test robots in simulated factories, restaurants, offices and emergency situations.

The heavily promoted games feature 51 events, including 30 sports competitions and 21 scenario-based contests. More than 40 percent require robots to operate fully autonomously, according to technology partner Huawei.

Two robots completed 100-meter runs in times faster than Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second human world record, while another completed 400 meters in 39.7 seconds, compared with South African Wayde van Niekerk’s human world record of 43.03 seconds.

REAL-WORLD TEST

Yet the demonstrations also exposed limitations. Braking remained a problem, with the sprinting machines crashing into a thick mat placed several meters beyond the finish line.

Beyond running, robots are competing in electric-vehicle charging, restaurant work, emergency response, industrial assembly, material loading and hand-dexterity challenges.

A cable-connection challenge tests machine vision, mechanical alignment and force control—abilities regarded as crucial if humanoid robots are eventually to work autonomously alongside humans in factories and warehouses.

“Only when it can work in those end scenarios does it have real value,” said Lumos Robotics Chief Executive Yu Chao. “Simply running and jumping does not improve efficiency.”

The competitions therefore test whether robots can identify objects, accurately position their hands and bodies, apply controlled force and recover from errors without human intervention.

MILITARY CONCERNS

China has invested heavily in robotics and AI as Beijing seeks technological leadership in industries expected to transform manufacturing, logistics and other sectors of the global economy.

However, the rapid development of increasingly autonomous humanoid machines has also raised concerns about potential military applications as China and the United States compete over technologies with both civilian and defense uses.

Amid the high-tech controversies, Taiwan has tightened export controls in recent years to prevent advanced technology and technical know-how from reaching China, which claims the democratically governed island as its territory despite strong objections from Taipei.

The alleged diversion of advanced AI servers highlights the difficulties Washington and its partners face in enforcing those restrictions as China accelerates development of its domestic AI and robotics industries.

Together, the Taiwan investigation and Beijing’s humanoid demonstrations underscored how the U.S.-China technological rivalry is expanding beyond computer chips and software into increasingly sophisticated machines capable of operating in the physical world.
