China Detains Christian For Listening To Bible In Car Amid Crackdown (Worthy News In-Depth)

BEIJING (Worthy News) – Concern was mounting Monday about a Christian in northwestern China who was detained for listening to the Bible stored on a USB memory stick plugged into his car’s audio system, amid a wider crackdown on Christian activities in the Communist-run nation, Christian sources said.

The believer, identified only as “Brother AK” for security reasons, comes from a Muslim background and lives in a Muslim-majority region of northwestern China, Christian aid and advocacy group Open Doors reported.

He was traveling with his wife and children to visit other Christians when police stopped the family at a checkpoint and noticed the USB device connected to the vehicle.

Asked why he was listening to the Bible, he reportedly told police officers: “Because I believe in Jesus, I was listening to the Bible through the USB,” before being detained for questioning.

Police instructed his wife to leave with their children, including a baby under one year old, while Brother AK remained in custody.

FAMILY SEPARATED

His wife and children were temporarily taken in by a Christian family in the town, but several days passed without news of his whereabouts, Worthy News learned.

The family sheltering them subsequently received a call from authorities questioning them about their relationship with Brother AK’s family, Christians said.

“At present, AK’s situation remains unclear, and we do not yet know what consequences he may face,” explained Jason, an Open Doors local partner who has been providing spiritual support to the family.

“We were recently informed that AK will be detained for 15 days. However, no specific charge or official basis for his detention has been disclosed by the authorities,” Jason added.

“We urgently need to pray.”

CHRISTIANS FACE DETENTIONS

Brother AK lives in a town under close government surveillance where Christians have faced similar pressure, Jason noted.

In an earlier case, another believer was discovered listening to the Bible through earphones in a public place and was taken into custody and questioned, according to Christians familiar with the situation.

After authorities learned that he had attended Christian gatherings, he was reportedly detained for 15 days.

Other Christians from the same church were subsequently questioned and held for one or two days.

“Incidents like these are becoming more common in China, as the authorities tighten their grip on any religious activity deemed a threat to the regime’s ideological control,” Open Doors warned.

CHRISTIAN MEDIA RESTRICTED

The restrictions extend even to Christian media that believers consume privately and rely on for spiritual instruction and fellowship, the organization added.

Christians such as Brother AK and his family face mounting pressure amid increasing government surveillance and tightening religious regulations, Open Doors noted.

China officially recognizes Protestantism and Catholicism among five authorized religions, but religious organizations are required to operate within a tightly controlled system overseen by Communist authorities.

Advocacy group Human Rights Watch says Chinese authorities systematically restrict religious freedom as the Communist Party tightens ideological control. In January, the rights group reported the detention of six members of an underground Protestant church based in Chengdu, describing it as the latest in a series of arrests targeting prominent unofficial house churches.

The crackdown comes under President Xi Jinping’s broader policy of “Sinicization of religion,” which seeks to bring religious beliefs and practices more closely into line with Chinese culture and Communist Party ideology, religious freedom monitors say.

U.S. COMMISSION SOUNDS ALARM

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, or USCIRF, has accused China of “systematic, ongoing, and egregious” violations of religious freedom and recommended that Washington continue designating the country as a “Country of Particular Concern.”

USCIRF has warned that under Xi, authorities have intensified restrictions on freedom of religion or belief while expanding efforts to bring religious doctrine, institutions and activities under Communist Party control.

Beijing rejects allegations that it persecutes people for their faith, maintaining that China protects freedom of religious belief and what authorities describe as “normal religious activities.”

However, an official Chinese government policy paper seen by Worthy News says adapting religion to socialist society means guiding religious groups “to support the leadership of the [Communist Party of China] CPC and the socialist system” and “embrace core socialist values.”

China ranks 17th on Open Doors’ 2026 World Watch List of 50 countries where the organization says Christians face the most severe persecution for their faith.

MILLIONS REMAIN CHRISTIAN

China received its highest-ever persecution score in the 2026 World Watch List despite dropping two places in the annual ranking.

Open Doors linked a renewed crackdown on house churches to new regulations governing online religious activities that took effect in September 2025, further restricting Christian activities outside state-approved channels.

The growing pressure is forcing some believers “further underground and deeper into the shadows,” the organization warned.

Yet despite the reported persecution and restrictions, Christianity remains widespread in China.

Open Doors estimates that China is home to about 96.7 million Christians, representing roughly 6.7 percent of the country’s population.
