Woman Killed, Five Wounded In Rare Swiss Rave Shooting

AARAU, SWITZERLAND (Worthy News) – A massive manhunt was underway Sunday after a 22-year-old woman was killed and five people injured, some seriously, in an overnight shooting at a rave in the Swiss town of Aarau, police said.

The shooting occurred shortly after 2:30 a.m. at the Aarau Rave, a large techno dance party being held at a covered horse-racing track in the Schachen district of Aarau, west of Zurich.

Four men and another woman, aged between 24 and 27, were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious, according to Aargau cantonal police. All six victims were residents of Switzerland.

Italy’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that the woman who died was an Italian citizen, while Italian officials were working with Swiss authorities and assisting her family.

Police said they had not yet determined who carried out the shooting or whether one or several people were involved.

MASSIVE MANHUNT

The manhunt was continuing at full speed as authorities tried to determine whether the perpetrator or perpetrators had fled on foot or in a vehicle, according to police officials.

Officers increased their presence beyond Aarau as a precaution, with armed police, convoys and armored vehicles seen around the town and surrounding area.

Large areas around the scene were cordoned off as investigators searched for evidence, while police appealed to members of the public to provide photographs or videos that could help establish what happened.

Police said the motive and precise circumstances remained unclear.

However, authorities cautioned that there were currently no indications the shooting was an act of terrorism and were investigating whether an altercation may have preceded the gunfire.

WITNESSES DESCRIBE PANIC

While the investigation was ongoing, witnesses recalled scenes of panic after shots rang out shortly after the music stopped.

One 34-year-old witness said he initially thought the sounds were fireworks. Some people sought shelter behind the DJ booth, while others desperately searched for places to hide.

The witness recalled that one woman hid behind a refrigerator but was struck in the back by a bullet and died despite attempts to revive her.

“It’s just incredibly tragic. She was young,” he added. “That something like this could happen in Aarau, at a local event, is simply unimaginable.”

The Aarau Rave VOL. 7 was expected to draw thousands of people, although reports differed on the estimated attendance.

RARE SWISS GUN VIOLENCE

Organizers said they were “shocked and heartbroken” by the bloodshed, saying a rave should be a place of “joy and love” rather than violence.

The deadly attack was particularly shocking in Switzerland, where violent public shootings remain relatively rare despite comparatively widespread gun ownership.

Switzerland, an Alpine nation of about 9 million people, has a longstanding firearms tradition partly linked to its militia-based military system, under which many citizens undergo military service. Estimates suggest there are roughly 28 civilian firearms for every 100 residents.

Although rare, Switzerland has experienced several major shootings. Among the deadliest was the September 2001 attack on the regional parliament in the Swiss canton of Zug, near Zurich, where gunman Friedrich Leibacher killed 14 politicians and wounded 18 others before taking his own life.

The Zug massacre prompted increased security around Swiss political institutions and contributed to a tightening of the country’s firearms laws.

Switzerland adopted additional firearms restrictions in 2019 after voters approved changes implementing an amended European Union weapons directive as part of the country’s participation in Europe’s Schengen system.

Police stressed Sunday that the circumstances surrounding the Aarau shooting remained under investigation as the search for those responsible continued.
