Same-Sex Couples Sue N. Dakota for Right to Marry
BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA (Worthy News)– Seven couples filed a federal lawsuit Friday challenging North Dakota’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. North Dakota became the last state in the country to be sued by same-sex couples seeking the right to marry in their home state.
Cases are pending in all 31 states which do not recognize gay marriage. Over the past year, judges have overturned several bans on same-sex marriage since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down part of the Federal Defense of Marriage Act.
In 2004, 73% of voters in North Dakota approved a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman.
In 19 states and the District of Columbia, same-sex couples can already be married.
